EuPRAXIA-DN Fellow Ana Maria Guisao Betancur, based at the University of Liverpool and the Cockcroft Institute, participated early in October in the 14th International Computational Accelerator Physics Conference, ICAP'24. The conference was held in Seeheim, Germany, hosted by TU Darmstadt and GSI.
Ana Maria contributed with a talk titled “Longitudinal Profile Reconstruction of Ultrashort Electron Bunches,” where she shared with the community the current state of development of the longitudinal profile monitor, part of her doctoral project, currently undergoing the design and proof on concept stage using simulations. During her presentation, she explained how they use coherent transition radiation images to reconstruct Gaussian profiles with a resolution of a few femtoseconds (around 10 fs) using convolutional neural networks in an ensemble model. She also linked the existing results with the next steps for a new iteration of the monitor design and how to use the same technique to achieve under 10 fs resolution in the near future.
During the conference, there were plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas and information about computational accelerator physics in existing and new experiments around the globe, from talks, networking, and discussion sessions throughout the 4-day event. Ana Maria gained specific and valuable insights into current practices in code development, data processing, simulations, machine learning, and advanced optimization.
“The conference was a great opportunity to connect with the wider community, ranging from experts with many years of experience to other PhD students in similar stages of their projects. It was a positive experience for my first international conference and talk, and I came back to the UK motivated with fresh ideas for our research.”
