Carsten P Welsch

Professor Carsten P Welsch studied physics and economics at the Universities of Frankfurt (Germany) and UC Berkeley (USA). He completed his PhD at the end of 2002. His further career brought him to RIKEN in Japan, the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg and CERN. Since October 2007 he has been leading the pan-European QUASAR Group.
Prof Welsch initiated the EuPRAXIA Doctoral Network and has been coordinating the network from INFN since January 2023. Having led 6 networks and 4 Individual Fellowships over the last decade, he is today one of the most experienced coordinators of Marie SkÅ‚odowska–Curie Actions projects.

He became a faculty member at the University of Liverpool and a member of the Cockcroft Institute of Accelerator Science and Technology in 2008. He was Head of the Physics Department between 2011 and 2023 and successfully developed it into one of the UK's best physics departments (REF2021). His research covers accelerator design and optimization, beam diagnostics, medical technologies, data science and antimatter research.
